Egypt soccer riot video: Over 70 dead at Port Said stadium
A riot in the Egyptian city of Port Said has left 74 dead and at least 248 wounded after football fans stormed the pitch before engaging in running battles. The country has announced three days of mourning. The majority of the victims died from suffocation and head injuries, health ministry officials said. Doctors are calling on the local population to donate blood for the injured because the violence has drained hospital reserves. A security official and a medic said fans of the home team, Al-Masry, swarmed the field after a rare 3-1 win against Al-Ahly, Egypt's top team. They threw stones, fireworks, and bottles at the fans and injured some players. A medic at a morgue in Port Said, a city on the Mediterranean coast, said some of the dead were security officers. He was speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters. The causes of the deaths were not immediately known. The players were later taken to the locker room for protection, Sayed Hamdi, a player told state TV. Soon after the violence, a soccer game in the Cairo Stadium between the Al-Ismailiya and Zamalek teams was called off in mourning for the violence in Port Said. State TV showed video of sections of the Cairo stadium on fire. The announcer said angry fans of the Zamalek protested the cancellation and set some sections of the stadium on fire. TV showed footage in which the Al-Ahly players were seen rushing for their locker room as fist fights broke out among the hundreds of fans swarming on the field. Some men had to rescue a manager from the losing team as he was being beaten by crazed insane fans who were also in tears. police officers stood by, appearing overwhelmed and some were even crying.Egypt's state prosecutor ordered an investigation into the violence, and the Egypt Football Association ordered an indefinite suspension of the annual championship. The parliament said it would convene an emergency session. TV reported the toll, citing a health ministry official who himself was holding back tears.
